Our history

2012/13 – 2013/14

Origins and a new name

The club began life in the 2012/13 season as Heanor Staffs, playing Sunday afternoon football in the Alfreton and District Sunday League.

In 2013 it was re-established as Codnor Athletic FC for the 2013/14 season, and continued in the Alfreton league over the following years, gradually building its own identity in local football.

2013/14 – 2023/24

The Alfreton years

Codnor Athletic never won the Alfreton and District Sunday League, but the period gave the club important memories. The biggest was the 2017/18 Jack Vickers Trophy final: Codnor finished runners-up after an 8-2 defeat to a Rolls Royce side that won the treble that season.

2024/25

Into Sunday morning football

For 2024/25 the club moved into the East Midlands Public Authorities League (EMPAL), trading Sunday afternoons for Sunday mornings. The debut Division 3 campaign was hard: Codnor fought relegation to the final match and ultimately dropped into Division 4.

2025/26

A championship response

The following season was the turning point. Codnor Athletic won the EMPAL Division 4 title, the club's first league championship, and an immediate return to Division 3.

2026/27

The next chapter

Back in Division 3 for 2026/27, Codnor now pairs its ambition on the pitch with a stronger long-term home at Denby Institute & Recreation Ground, built through the collective effort of players, volunteers and supporters.
